本週我們來學習與河流和湖泊相關的詞彙

1. estuary /'estjʊ(ə)rɪ/

n. 河口;江口；

雅思聽力16-1-3: We should mention some geographical factors, things like wetlands andriver estuariesand coastal erosion and so on.

e.g. Development along the estuary's coastline has reduced the size of its wetland areas, putting many species at risk.

補充：coastal adj. 沿海的

2. winding /'waɪndɪŋ/

adj. 彎曲的;蜿蜒的

雅思聽力17-1-4: There are various designs of labyrinth but what they all have in common is a winding spiral path which leads to a central area.

e.g. The winding river flowed through the lush valley, creating beautiful curves in the landscape.

v. wind (道路、河流或一隊人)蜿蜒向前，曲折而行，迂迴

e.g. The river winds through the valley.

e.g. The river winds its way across the valley, bending around hills and forests.

syn: meander 迂迴曲折地行進；蜿蜒

e.g. The river meanders through the mountain to the east.

3. serene /sɪ'riːn/

adj. 平靜的;寧靜的;安詳的；

e.g. The serene lake reflected the mountains perfectly, creating a breathtaking view.

e.g. We sat by the serene lake, listening to the sound of distant birds, without a wave disturbing the calm.

補充：a breathtaking view壯觀的景色

calm n.平靜;安靜;寧靜

4. sediment /'sedɪm(ə)nt/

n. 沉渣;沉澱物

e.g. After the heavy rains, the lake was muddy, with suspended sediment clouding the water.

e.g. The sediment deposited in the estuary helps create rich soil, supporting a variety of plant and animal life.

補充：muddy adj. 泥濘的

syn. deposit 沉澱物;沉積物

e.g. The deposit of sand near the river mouth formed a small island over time.

5. silt /sɪlt/

n. 淤泥;泥沙

e.g. The tunnel had been blocked with silt.

雅思10-4-2：Look out for the ship's wheel which was missing until only five years ago when it was dredged out of thesiltby a local fisherman.

v. 淤塞

搭配：silt up

e.g. The river gradually silted up over the years, making it difficult for boats to pass through.
